Bank & SSC - Important Vocabulary
Odious (adjective)
Hindi translation: घिनौना 
Meaning:  Extremely unpleasant
Memory Tip: Od + ious → Odour + Is → The odour (smell) is odious because it is extremely unpleasant
Use in Sentence: The criminal’s odious smile made all the children scream on their field trip to the Jail.
 
Abandon (verb)
Hindi translation: छोड़ देना
Meaning: Leave someone or something
Memory Tip:  लड़की वालों का अभिनन्दन न करके,लड़के वालों ने शादी के एक दिन पहले लड़की कोabandon किया
Use in Sentence: The buildings looked abandoned when we first set foot in the locality.
 
Nourish (verb)
Hindi translation: पालना 
Meaning: Provide for growth OR Keep a belief for a long time 
Memory Tip: When you are nourished, you will flourish (prosper) 
Use in Sentence:
(1) The plant needs to be nourished with not just water and manure, but also love and care.
 
Controversial (adjective)
Hindi Translation: विवादग्रस्त 
Meaning: Something that causes disagreement from many people
Memory Tip: Con + T + Versia → Kaun + Thi + Varsha → “कौन थी वो वर्षा जिसने ह्रितिक रोशन का दिल जीता?” इस बात पर controversy चालू हो गयी सारी TV चैनलों पर 
Use in Sentence: The ambassador steered clear of the controversial discussion when questioned by the reporters.
 
Garnish (verb, noun)
Hindi translation:  सजावट 
Meaning:  Decorate something (especially food) 
Memory Tip:
(1) दाल के ऊपर धनिया डालोगे तो वो दाल की सजावट (garnish) बन जाएगी 
Use in Sentence: The fried rice was garnished with some spring onions.
 
Profound (adjective)
Hindi translation: गहरा
Meaning: Intense OR Deep
Memory Tip: Prof + found → Professor + found → Professor found deep knowledge in his books → Profound knowledge in books 
Use in Sentence: He didn’t know of Naina’s profound feelings of love for him, so he got married to someone else.
 
Erroneous (adjective)
Hindi translation: गलत 
Meaning:  Wrong
Memory Tip: If there are errors, it is erroneous. 
Use in Sentence: You can’t apply erroneous logic to convince me that the law favouring women’s exclusion from voting is how you can curb election fraud.
 
Viable (adjective)
Hindi translation: व्यवहार्य 
Meaning: Feasible, Possible to do 
Memory Tip: Vi + able → We + able → We are able to do this, so it is feasible. 
Use in Sentence: Renting a flat close to work seems like a viable alternative to travelling.
 
Brood (verb)
Hindi Translation: चिंता करना 
Meaning: Think deeply about something that makes you angry, unhappy or worried
Memory Tip:
(1) B + ood → Bad + Mood
(2) The famous pose by Manoj Kumar is an act of brooding.
Use in Sentence: Instead of brooding over the problem, think of a solution.
 
Conceit (noun)
Hindi translation:  दंभ 
Meaning:  Excessive pride in oneself 
Memory Tip: Conce + it → कौनसी + इतराते  →कौनसी जगह से आये हो कि इतना इतराते हो ?
Use in Sentence: The prince was full of conceit about his good looks and his powerful family because of which he had few friends.
