Dormant (adjective)
Hindi translation: निष्क्रिय
Meaning: Inactive OR Sleeping
Memory Tip: Dormant → Doormat → Do not be like a doormat and do nothing.
Use in Sentence: The bears find a comfortable cave, go into hibernation for 6 months at a time, where they remain dormant without eating.
Impugn (verb)
Hindi translation: प्रतिवाद करना
Meaning: Challenge the validity or motive behind something.
Memory Tip: Im + pugn → In + Punga → In +पंगा → In this पंगा, I will impugn his statement that I am not a trustworthy person.
Use in Sentence: The judge impugned the evidence provided by the defence lawyer.
Outweigh (verb)
Hindi translation: पल्ला झुकना
Meaning: Be greater or more significant than
Memory Tip: On a weighing scale, the customer’s vegetables should always outweigh the vendor’s standard weights because in consumer laws, customer’s interests outweigh the seller’s interests.
Use in Sentence: His intelligence far outweighed his lack of good looks, which is why he was popular among the girls in his class.
Herald (noun, verb)
Hindi Translation:अग्र–दूत OR घोषणा करना
Meaning: A sign that something is about to happen
Memory Tip: Her + ald → Her + all → Her habit of spreading news to all before the thing happened unfairly got her the reputation of being a gossip.
Use in Sentence: The song of the cuckoo bird is considered to be the herald of spring.
Deprive (verb)
Hindi translation: वंचित करना
Meaning: Prevent from using or having something
Memory Tip: De + Prive → They + Prevent → They prevent us from getting good jobs, they have deprived us of our livelihood.
Use in Sentence: The women were deprived of their fundamental right to equality when they were prevented from entering the temple.
Nascent (adjective)
Hindi translation: नवजात
Meaning: Just coming into existence and displaying signs of future potential
Memory Tip: Na + scent → New + Scent →Something new always gives off a new kind of scent (e.g. the new book smell, new car smell etc.)
Use in Sentence: He wants to invest in the nascent aerospace industry in India.
Consent (verb, noun)
Hindi translation: सहमति
Meaning: Agreement
Memory Tip: Co + Sent → Co-operate + Send →We all consented to co-operate and send the poor but talented young boy to the Olympics.
Use in Sentence: The consent of all the stakeholders is important in taking any decision regarding the property.
Germane (adjective)
Hindi Translation: सार्थक
Meaning: Relevant
Memory Tip: Ger + mane → Agar + Maane →अगर + माने → अगर Germane बातें करोगे तो सबमानेंगे लेकिन हज़ार चीज़ें बीच में लाने की कोशिश करोगे तो किसी को नहीं समझेगा
Use in Sentence: The media has been advised to only ask questions that are germane to the ongoing water crisis in the country and leave out the scandals and politics.
Elated (verb, adjective)
Hindi translation: उल्लसित
Meaning: Become very happy
Memory Tip: Rhymes with elevated → When you get a promotion (elevated in position), you become elated.
Use in Sentence: The player was elated after he defeated the World Number 1 in the finals.
Incompetent (adjective)
Hindi translation: अक्षम
Meaning: Lacking skills to do something
Memory Tip: In + Competent → No + Competition → If you are incompetent, you are no competition for anyone.
Use in Sentence: The incompetent security guard slept as the house was robbed under his nose.
