Bank & SSC - Important Vocabulary
Cursory (adjective)
Hindi translation: सरसरी 
Meaning: Not thorough or detailed
Memory Tip: Cur + Sory → Cure + Sorry → If your cure is cursory, you will be sorry!
Use in Sentence: It was evident that the Manager either knew nothing or was careless because all he did was take a cursory glance at the junior’s project report before approving it.
 
Multitude (noun)
Hindi translation: बहुलता 
Meaning:  A large number 
Memory Tip: Multi means many. Thus, many things or a lot of things.
Use in Sentence: There have been a multitude of adverse effects on the environment due to global warming.
 
Abrasive (adjective)
Hindi translation: अपघर्षक 
Meaning: Coarse OR Harsh 
Memory Tip:
(1) Rhymes with aggressive, which means harsh behaviour.
(2) Ab + rasive → erasive → something harsh that can erase or rub away.
Use in Sentence: Her abrasive way of speaking made her appear unfriendly.
 
Debilitate (verb)
Hindi translation: कमज़ोर बनाना
Meaning: Weaken
Memory Tip: De + ability → Remove ability → If you remove someone’s ability, you weaken them.
Use in Sentence: The World War II, although a victory, debilitated the British Empire and made way for the Indian Independence movement in earnest.
 
Melancholy (noun)
Hindi Translation: उदासी 
Meaning: Sadness
Memory Tip: Melan + choly → Milan + Chali →मिलन + चली → मिलन के बाद जब प्रेमिका चली जाती है तो melancholy हो जाते हो
Use in Sentence: There was an air of melancholy around the house giving it a haunted appearance.
 
Mitigate (verb)
Hindi translation: घटाना, कम करना 
Meaning: Make something less severe
Memory Tip: Miti + Gate → मिट्टी + घटा → आँगन मिट्टी से गंदा हो रहा था, जब मिट्टी को वहाँ से घटा दिया तो बीवी का गुस्सा mitigate हो गया
Use in Sentence: The problems of drought can be mitigated by rainwater harvesting.
 
Impediment (verb)
Hindi translation: बाधा, रुकावट
Meaning: Obstacle
Memory Tip: Im + Pedi + Ment → In + Pedon +Maintenance → इन + पेड़ों + Maintenance →अगर इन पेड़ों का Maintenance नहीं करोगे तो इनकीgrowth रुक जाएगी
Use in Sentence: The opposition created an impediment in getting the bill passed.
 
Perceptive (adjective)
Hindi translation: भेदक
Meaning: Having the ability to understand things that are not very obvious
Memory Tip: Per + Ceptive → Perfect + Captain → Perfect Captain वही होगा जोsituation को अच्छे से समझ सके
Use in Sentence: India’s perceptive captain understood the pitch very well and he gave an over to Kohli.
 
Torment (noun or verb)
Hindi translation: कष्ट
Meaning:  Severe physical or mental suffering
Memory Tip: Tor + Ment → तोड़ + Mentally → किसी को इतना कष्ट हो कि उसे mentally तोड़ दे
Use in Sentence: The deaths of their young children in the accident left the parents in severe torment.
 
Abrupt (adjective)
Hindi Translation: अचानक
Meaning: Sudden
Memory Tip: Ab + Rupt → जब + erupt (फटना) → जब ज्वालामुखी erupt होता है, वो Abruptly (अचानक से) होता है
Use in Sentence: The abrupt ending of the movie was not appreciated by the audience.
