Bank & SSC - Important Vocabulary 9


Prerequisite (noun, adjective)
Hindi Translation: शर्त 
Meaning: Prior condition 
Memory Tip: Pre + Requisite → Pre (meaning ‘before’) + Requirement → A requirement necessary from before.
Use in Sentence: Fluent writing and speaking skills in English are prerequisites for this job.
 
Ornate (adjective)
Hindi translation: अलंकृत
Meaning: Highly decorated
Memory Tip: Ornate → Ornaments → When we use ornaments to decorate something, it becomes ornate.
Use in Sentence: The ornate throne was studded with rubies and other precious gems.
 
Proficient (adjective)
Hindi translation: कुशल 
Meaning: Skilled 
Memory Tip: Proficient → Pro + efficient →When you show efficiency in something, you become proficient. 
Use in Sentence: He is proficient at Computers which gave him an edge over the other candidates.
 
Malign (verb, adjective)
Hindi translation: हानिकारक OR बुराई करना 
Meaning:
(1) Evil OR Harmful (adjective)
(2) Speak bad things about someone to others (verb) 
Memory Tip:
(1) Malign → Malinga → Malinga’s yorkers are a malign force of destruction against the other team’s batsmen.
Use in Sentence:
(1) The witch used her malign influence on the King and convinced him to sacrifice the Queen.
 
Incline (noun)
Hindi translation:  झुकाव 
Meaning: A slope
Memory Tip:
(1) Incline → Cline → Climb → You need to climb a slope (incline)
(2) The tilt in the earth’s axis is measured roughly at an incline of 23.5º.
Use in Sentence: The route of the train follows a long incline through the ghats.
 
Inclined (verb, adjective)
Hindi translation:  प्रवृत्त 
Meaning: Tendency to do something or favour something.
Memory Tip: In + clined → In + Line → When you have a tendency towards something or to favour something you tend to think in one line only.
Use in Sentence: He was inclined to play music rather than sports even though his father was a world-famous cricketer.
 
Benign (adjective)
Hindi Translation: सौम्य 
Meaning: Gentle and kind. 
Memory Tip:  Benign → Being nice
Use in Sentence: The giant dog looked ferocious but was actually just a benign creature that loved playing with kids.
 
Torrential (adjective)
Hindi translation: मूसलधार 
Meaning: Extremely heavy (rainfall/floods/snow etc.)
Memory Tip: Torr + Ential → Tore + Potential→ Tear + Potential → When rain has the potential to tear the house down, it is called torrential.
Use in Sentence: We had to cancel the picnic at the last moment because of the torrential downpour that started suddenly.
 
Bestow (verb)
Hindi translation: अर्पित करना
Meaning: Present (an honour, title or gift)
Memory Tip: Best + to → When you give the Best Director Award to someone, you bestow him with an honour.
Use in Sentence: The BCCI bestowed Kohli with the Best Cricketer Award this year.
 
Reluctant (adjective)
Hindi translation: अनिच्छुक 
Meaning: Unwilling to do something ORHesitating 
Memory Tip:  Rel + Ctant → Really + Can’t →When you ask your reluctant friend to go out with you but she says “I really can’t.”
Use in Sentence: The young man seemed reluctant to answer the policeman’s questions which raised suspicions that he was in fact the murderer.
